ISO 18587:2017 Certification for Translation Services / Post-editing of Machine Translation Output
The ISO 18587 standard establishes requirements for the process of machine translation, its post-editing, and the competence of editors for translation service providers, their clients, and editors.
The standard is applicable only to content processed with machine translation!
General translation services are covered by the ISO 17100 standard.
The use of machine translation systems increasingly meets the continuously growing demands of the profession and the industry. Many translation service providers and clients have realized that machine translation systems provide effective solutions for projects that need to be completed within tight deadlines and/or low budgets.
Further advantages include the ability for translation service providers to:
- increase translation efficiency,
- accelerate turnaround times,
- remain competitive and cost-effective in a constantly changing environment.
Naturally, there is no machine translation whose result would match traditional, human professional translation. The quality of translation still depends on human translators and their competence in post-editing.
Machine translation systems evolve at such a pace that it would not be practical to develop a comprehensive international standard that could potentially inhibit innovation and the entire machine translation industry.
Therefore, this standard only addresses post-editing, which begins from the output of machine translation.
